Offshore Wind

Offshore engineering – we calculate the water too

In offshore engineering we develop converter platforms, substations and foundations for offshore wind farms and marine energy projects.

We account for operation, fabrication, transport and installation from the concept stage onwards.

We work from the project-specific design basis, the load assumptions and the wind, wave and current data, together with the site conditions. We account for operation, fabrication, transport and installation from the concept stage onwards. We produce calculations, 3D models and certifiable documents for approval, fabrication and construction.

Load analysis

From load analysis to design

These boundary conditions determine how we design support structures, joints and connections. We use them to assess strength, fatigue and service life. So we analyse the site conditions before detailed design begins: environmental conditions, soil investigation reports and project-specific load assumptions.

Only once we know the actual loads can we calculate a design with confidence. In offshore engineering we look at the structure across its full life cycle. Operation, fabrication, transport and installation are part of the design from day one. This produces structures that can be calculated, fabricated, transported and installed.

Services

Platforms, foundations, transition pieces

We develop offshore structures from the concept phase through to fabrication documentation. We handle concept development, basic design and detailed design. We also prepare the documents for fabrication, transport and installation. Depending on the project, we take on individual work packages or complete scopes of engineering work. We produce calculations, 3D models, fabrication drawings and technical documentation for each project phase and approval stage.

01 · Concept

Design concept

We develop structural concepts for offshore installations based on the technical requirements and the site-specific design constraints. We account for design basis, water depth, soil conditions, transport concepts and installation methods.

The result is a preliminary design as the basis for the next project phase.

02 · Design

Basic & detailed design

We build the 3D models and carry out the required structural assessments. We calculate strength, stability and fatigue with RFEM and ANSYS.

We document the results in certifiable calculations and design documents for approval and technical release.

03 · Detailing

Structural design & detailing

We develop the structural details — welded connections, bolted connections, joints, reinforcements and secondary steel.

From the 3D model, we produce fabrication drawings and parts lists. Depending on the project, we provide the documentation through to the production stage.

04 · T+I

Transport & installation

Transport and installation create load cases that differ considerably from later operation.

We calculate these load cases and develop the documents for seafastening, lifting operations and installation.

05 · Foundation

Foundation types

We develop and calculate monopiles, jackets, tripods and transition pieces.

We take account of the requirements arising from soil conditions, load assumptions and installation methods.

06 · Floating

Floating structures

Our engineers have investigated floating offshore wind structures in research projects. The findings feed into current developments.

More on this in the Innovation section.

Soil conditions, environmental requirements, subsea cables and logistics affect every offshore structure. We use the results of soil investigations and metocean analyses in our calculations and design work. These results inform the design.

Projects

Selected offshore projects

Our engineers have contributed to the development of substations and foundations for offshore projects in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Depending on the project, we took on defined work packages or worked as part of larger engineering teams – from concept and preliminary design through to detailed design, transport and installation.

FAQ

What our clientsask us.

Our offshore engineering covers monopiles, jackets and gravity-based foundations as well as transition pieces and substations.

We produce certifiable documents to the applicable rules. The approval itself sits with the authority and the applicant.

Yes. We work within existing project structures and manage clearly defined interfaces with the EPC contractor, fabrication and certification bodies.

We have developed concepts and investigated them in research projects. We can apply this work to client projects. We have not completed one for a client yet. Details under Innovation.

Depending on the task we use RFEM, RSTAB or ANSYS.

No. Those come from specialist consultants. We apply the results as boundary conditions in the design.
